Traditional Chinese Medicine: More Than Just 'Ouch'

Traditional Chinese Medicine: More Than Just 'Ouch'

You’ve seen the purple circles on Olympic swimmers. You want to try it. But where? The dodgy place with neon lights, or the hospital?

1. “Tuina” (Medical Massage)

Hot Search Terms: Tuina massage benefits, Hospital massage dept China

  • Where: Go to a TCM Hospital (e.g., Beijing Hospital of TCM).
  • The Experience: It is NOT relaxing. It is a medical procedure. The doctor will manipulate your joints and dig into your meridians. You might cry.
  • The Result: Your chronic back pain might actually disappear for months.
  • Cost: ~$10 covered by insurance.

2. “Zuliao” (Foot Massage)

  • Where: Commercial chains like “Holland & Barrett” style spas (Look for 足疗 on Meituan).
  • The Experience: Pure bliss. You sit in a cinema chair, watch a movie, eat free fruit, and have someone work on your feet for 60 minutes.
  • Cost: $20 - $40.

3. Acupuncture & Cupping

  • The Safety Rule: Only do this at a Hospital or a licensed TCM Clinic (Tongrentang 同仁堂 is a safe bet).
  • Why: Hygiene. Hospitals use disposable needles. Street shops might not be as rigorous.

How to ask for it?

Show this to the receptionist:

  • “I have neck/back pain.” -> 我脖子/背很疼 (Wo bo-zi / bei hen teng)
  • “Please be gentle.” -> 请轻一点 (Qing qing yi dian)
  • “I want cupping.” -> 我想拔罐 (Wo xiang ba guan)

Summary:

  • Pain relief? Go to a Hospital for Tuina.
  • Relaxation? Go to a Spa for Zuliao.
