Emergency! 120 vs. 999 and What to Expect in the ER

Emergency! 120 vs. 999 and What to Expect in the ER

If you dial 911 in China, nothing happens. You need to burn these numbers into your brain.

The Numbers

  • 120 (Medical Emergency): This is the National ambulance service.
    • Pros: Official, goes to the nearest public ER.
    • Cons: English speakers are rare.
  • 999 (Red Cross - Beijing Specific): Used mostly in Beijing.
    • Pros: Often has more available ambulances in non-peak times.
    • Cons: Privately run, slightly more expensive.
  • 110 (Police): If you can’t get through to 120, call police. They can help coordinate.

What to say?

If you don’t speak Chinese, say: “Foreigner. [Location]. Emergency.” Keep it simple.

The “Ambulance Rule” You Must Know

Hot Search Terms: Ambulance cost China, Do ambulances carry medicine

Unlike in the West, Chinese ambulances are basically Medical Taxis.

  1. Payment: You often have to pay the ambulance fee (around 200-500 RMB) on the spot (WeChat/Cash) before they offload you.
  2. Paramedics: They do basic stabilization but do not perform major surgeries in the van.
  3. Family: A family member or friend usually needs to ride along to handle the registration paperwork at the hospital arrival.

Which ER?

If you have a choice, ask to go to a Class 3A Hospital (三甲医院). They are the only ones with 24/7 full-capability trauma centers.

Summary:

  • Call 120 first.
  • Have Alipay/WeChat ready to pay the driver.
